The Drifters are an American doo-wop and R&B/soul vocal group.
They were originally formed as a backing group for Clyde
McPhatter, formerly the lead tenor of Billy Ward and his
Dominoes in 1953 The original Drifters were comprised of
Bill Pinkney, Willie Ferbee, Clyde McPhatter, Gerhart
Thrasher, and Andrew Thrasher. There have been at least three
groups of Drifters with lead singers being Bill Pinkney, Ben E.
King, and Charlie Thomas. Bill Pinkney passed away on July 5, 2007,
Ben E. King passed on April 30, 2015, and Charlie Thomas who was
a Drifter for over 60 years passed on January 31, 2023. Move Across
The River is a well known Carolina Shag tune.
